Before I started testing the Roomba 880 much like Dyson brand vacuums, I had heard my fair share of hoopla that was iRobot. Regrettably, my dreams of directing “Parks and Recreation” were dashed when I unboxed it and began examining instead. Thankfully, though, what I found was a smart little robot vacuum Melaka that came in second or first place in every performance type that was single.
The Roomba 880 is a brand new version for iRobot and the really first 800-series bot for the brand.

Yes, I’d advocate the Roomba 880 in the marketplace for a high-end-priced robot vac. It performed better in relation to the RM2950 Roomba 790, and much better than the RM3880 LG Hom-Bot Square, as well as the RM2600 Infinuvo CleanMate QQ5.
So what’s different? At first, not a whole lot. But, flip the vacuum over and you’re going to see something totally new: AeroForce technology. I’ll go into that more later, but it’s essentially a layout and attribute update that enhances performance a whole lot.
All in all, the 880 will be greatest for somebody who appreciates gadgets and recognizes that the robot vacuum isn’t designed to replace all other floor cleaning. Additionally, it is not the best option for someone only interested in vacuuming pet hair up.

Design
The 8.4-pound Roomba is an adorable and capable robot vacuum. It’s a height of 3.6 inches and a width of 13.9 inches. It’s finished in black (unlike the 790’s blue end), and has a carrying handle so you can very quickly transport it.
Aside from the vacuum itself, in addition, you get a Home Base, or dock, two Virtual Wall/Lighthouse detectors with four C batteries contained, a supplementary HEPA filter, and a remote control with two AA batteries included.
The 880 doesn’t stray too far from the present layout of iRobot. It’s that same big Clean/Power button in the middle, and the same rounded look. The business clearly wished to maintain the Roomba’s unassuming, minimalist design and sturdy construction.

Attributes
The best feature provided on the Roomba 880 is the recently designed AeroForce cleaning system of iRobot. It comprises two bristle-free extractors that rotate inward to speed airflow and increase suction. There is also a high efficiency vacuum, and a new XLife battery that claims to last much longer.
The screen on the very top of the vacuum comprises these buttons: Clock, Dock, Program, and Area. Hit on the Dock button as well as your Roomba will go back to Home Base. Select Clock and you could set hour, the day, and minute. Select Schedule and you also can program a cleaning routine that is particular for the Roomba each week, to handle. And also the unique Spot alternative targets little cleaning places — it returns to where it started to deeply clean a particular section of floor back and after that rotates out 3 feet from its starting point.

The 880 also offers various indicator lights to talk to you as it charges or cleans. Docked, the battery light will flash amber as it charges when it is fully charged, plus it’ll preserve a solid green color. Solid red means that the battery is not full. A Soil Detect targets those areas for cleaning and attribute senses debris. A troubleshooting light will appear if there is an issue, when the Roomba is wanting to untangle itself, and a antitangle light will show. A full bin light lets you know when the tray must be emptied.
You may also initiate regular cleaning and spot cleaning from your remote, dock the Roomba, although you can control those things right on the Roomba, or steer it around using the arrow buttons. And should you want to block a specific room for cleaning off, the Virtual Walls behave like fences that are invisible; the 880 will not move past them. You also possess the alternative of turning your Virtual Walls into Lighthouses. Place them throughout your house as well as your Roomba will undoubtedly not be unable to follow them reunite to Home Base without becoming lost and to clean room by room.

Usability
This vacuum is very simple to make use of. Place it on regular clean, spot clean, or create your own agenda ahead of time, and allow it to go. You can also rely on different accessories such as the Virtual Walls and the Lighthouses mentioned in the Attributes section above to help guide it throughout your house or to keep it from leaving a room and back to Home Base. The 880 requires very little effort and interaction from you (maybe even significantly less as opposed to Neato, since the Roomba has a distant for increased accessibility along with the Neato does not).
The 880 additionally senses how much time it takes to clean a specified space and it will go back to the pier to charge when it believes that job is done. It does not get much easier than that. Yet, you can’t exactly estimate how long it might require the Roomba to clean a room — particularly when you first get it.

If you’re on the go, a robot vacuum just isn’t the best cleaning procedure. Sure, it follows algorithms that cover just as much ground as you possibly can, but in the event that you wish to clean something quickly, seeing a Roomba run is like waiting for water to boil a bit. Speed of good use is a little less predictable, while ease of good use is high.
Also, while the dust bin is not difficult to remove, if it isn’t placed right it will dump everything all over the place just cleaned. And since it’s small, you will have to empty that bin and shake the filter pretty much every time you use it out. The detectors must be cleaned periodically, too.
Nevertheless, when the upkeep isn’t running makes this low-care Roomba look a bit high care. Though, cleaning isn’t almost as involved as it’d be with a bigger, more conventional upright or canister vacuum cleaner because it’s so modest and simple to lift.
Performance
So, how did it do?
First, all of the built in detectors performed flawlessly. The cliff sensors that keep the Roomba from taking a tumble understood every time it stopped got near an edge, and changed direction. The Virtual Walls and Lighthouses I set up also did an excellent job either confining or leading the Roomba where it needed to really go to clean my house around. And when I analyzed it in my own living room, it fit underneath the media center, a pretty low arm chair, and the coffee table without objection. Now that’s loyalty

I also analyzed the 880 in a more controlled office setting and it did especially well on the rice evaluation. Actually, it beat out the other four models on all three surfaces — midpile carpet, low-pile carpet, and hardwood. I scattered 2.5 ounces of black rice equally and let the Roomba run. It did a fantastic job. The side spinner brush really came in handy here. Any isolated bits of rice were sailed into the road of the Roomba and rapidly transported to the dust bin.
The Roomba picked up an average of 2.38 ounces on midpile, 2.43 ounces on low-pile, and 2.33 ounces on hardwood.
This test actually accounts for those bits of food which may end up lodged in your own living room carpeting when you’re noshing and watching TV, or underneath the kitchen table, or in the kitchen during cleaning and frenzied cooking. And the 880 shown that it was up to the task on all flooring surfaces. This was the very first test I performed, plus it was clear that iRobot had made pretty important improvements because the 790 to its vacuums.
Pet hair is one of those tests that may make or break a purchase decision. Take the Roomba 790, for instance. That’s one major reasons why the 880 was designed by iRobot as a replacement. The recently constructed Roomba 880 has elaborate new bristleless debris extractors that remove pet hair (and everything else) with less fuss.

It performed marginally better in other evaluations, but considerably better around the pet hair evaluations than the 790. The Neato remains the reigning champ of pet hair, however, together with the other models falling way behind that and the Roomba 880 dropping somewhat behind. In the event you might be thinking about a well rounded performer, the 880 is the most effective, but if you’re primarily interested in having your bot undertake unrestrained pet hair, select the Neato.
The 880 removed 0.12 ouncs from the midpile carpeting, 0.10 ounce from the low-pile carpet, and 0.17 oz from the hardwood flooring. Not bad whatsoever.
IRobot’s new AeroForce extractors are also made to battle tangling better than preceding Roomba models. This is what occurred after it spent about 10 minutes vacuuming my family room.
Essentially, that isn’t supposed to happen. And it didn’t happen on any of the pet that is curbed hair tests I did in the office. However, in the wild west of my family room, Halley’s long hair proved a small challenge. The takeaway is that this robot vacuum is warm, but some jobs are only too big.
